The Survive-a-Storm TwisterPod is an above-ground tornado shelter engineered to withstand EF5 winds exceeding 250 mph — built from 3/16" heavy-duty steel, FEMA-compliant, and sized to fit inside a standard garage without excavation or major construction.

Above Ground Protection
No Digging. No Flooding. No Compromises.
Underground shelters require excavation, are prone to flooding, and can trap you if debris blocks the hatch. The TwisterPod installs above ground on a concrete slab inside your garage or on your property — accessible in seconds, flood-proof by design, and built from the same 100% steel construction as shelters used in FEMA community safe rooms.
No cracking. No crumbling. No leaking. Steel doesn't fail the way concrete and fiberglass alternatives can under extreme debris impact.

Engineered Construction
Cylindrical Steel. Built Like a Pipe.
The TwisterPod's cylindrical shape is an engineering choice, not a design one. Rolling 3/16" heavy-duty steel into a structural pipe configuration gives it exceptional resistance to lateral wind forces and flying debris impact. A flat-walled shelter deflects; a cylinder redirects. When 250 mph winds are throwing 2x4s like missiles, that difference matters.
Powder-coated with a baked-on finish for long-term rust and corrosion resistance, whether it lives in a humid garage or outside year-round.
Built to the Details That Matter
Triple-Locking Door Latch
Commercial grade single-lever handle locks in three points simultaneously with padlock protection. One motion, fully secured.
Interior Lock Mechanism
Operated from inside with the same single-lever action. Secure from within in seconds, without fumbling with multiple deadbolts.
Double-Welded Hinges
Hinges double-welded for superior strength. The door won't fail at the hinge point under extreme pressure or impact loading.
12-Point Anchor System
12 anchor bolts rated at 4,600 lbs per bolt — 55,200 lbs of total holding force keeping the shelter fixed to the concrete slab.
Welded Interior Benches
Seating on both sides of the interior keeps occupants stable and comfortable during a storm. Welded in, not bolted — they won't shift.
Conduit Connection Port
Pre-fitted port for electrical, coax, or Cat-5 cable. Run power, communications, or a weather alert system into the shelter without compromising the shell.
Installed and Ready
TwisterPods installed by real customers across the US.

Frequently Asked Questions
General
When is the best time to buy a storm shelter?
The best time to buy a tornado shelter is before tornado season strikes. The slow season for shelter manufacturers is September through February, which makes it the ideal time to buy. Waiting until the first tornado hits may be too late.
What happens if the house collapses on top of my storm shelter after a tornado?
Survive-A-Storm offers a proprietary StormWarn Service with every shelter. If a tornado touches down in your area, they will attempt to confirm you are safe. If they are unable to reach you or your emergency contacts, they notify emergency crews and provide the exact GPS coordinates of your shelter so assistance can be dispatched.
If I have a basement or interior bathroom, why do I need a storm shelter?
Tornadoes can be strong enough to destroy houses and tear through even the strongest floor framing. Flying debris can punch through wood beams over eight inches thick. Survive-A-Storm shelters are tested to withstand an EF5 tornado and manufactured in compliance with FEMA 320 standards.
What if lightning strikes my unit?
All Survive-A-Storm shelters function as a Faraday Cage — the same principle Michael Faraday demonstrated in 1836 and used by electrical linemen working on high-voltage lines today. The electrical charge is eliminated from the interior, providing protection from lightning strikes.
Do you offer handicapped accessible tornado shelters?
The Extreme model shelters come with a 32" door opening and are ADA accessible.
How does the tornado shelter door open if debris falls on it?
Some models use an inswing door design, which opens inward and cannot be blocked by debris on the exterior. Other models include a provision for an optional jack to pry the door open if debris blocks the entrance.
Will my cell phone work inside the tornado shelter?
Your cell phone will work inside the shelter under normal conditions. However, in an active tornado event, cell towers are likely to be damaged or destroyed.
Can my above ground shelter be moved if I sell my home?
Yes. Above ground shelters can be removed and relocated if you move. Contact Survive-A-Storm directly for relocation guidance specific to your model.
Will a shelter add value to my home?
In tornado-prone markets, storm shelters are recognized by realtors and buyers as a meaningful addition. Homes with installed shelters often attract buyers more quickly and command stronger offers in areas where tornado risk is a factor in purchasing decisions.
Which items should I keep inside my storm shelter?
Recommended items include water, a first aid kit, a flashlight, extra batteries, a weather radio, a list of emergency contacts, any required medications, and basic tools. Keep supplies rotated and check them seasonally.
Which is safer, a below ground or above ground tornado shelter?
Both are effective when built to FEMA and ICC-500 standards. Below ground shelters offer protection from direct wind forces. Above ground shelters eliminate the risk of flooding and are more accessible for people with mobility limitations. The right choice depends on your site conditions, soil type, water table, and household needs.
Construction
Are your units FEMA 320 and/or FEMA 361 compliant?
Yes. Survive-A-Storm shelters are manufactured in compliance with FEMA 320 (residential safe rooms) and FEMA 361 (community safe rooms) guidelines, which establish the design and construction standards for tornado and hurricane safe rooms.
Are your units ICC-500 compliant?
Yes. Survive-A-Storm shelters comply with ICC-500, the International Code Council standard for the design and construction of storm shelters.
Have your units passed the Texas Tech wind research institute testing replicating an F5 storm?
Yes. Survive-A-Storm shelters have been tested by the Texas Tech Wind Science and Engineering Research Center under conditions replicating an F5 tornado, including wind-borne debris impact testing.
Will your shelters stand up to an EF5 tornado?
Yes. Survive-A-Storm shelters are tested and designed to withstand EF5 tornado conditions, the highest rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with wind speeds exceeding 200 mph.
What is the warranty on your tornado shelters?
Survive-A-Storm shelters carry a lifetime warranty on the steel structure. Contact us for full warranty terms specific to your model.
What is the advantage of steel tornado shelters over concrete?
Steel shelters are manufactured to precise tolerances in a controlled environment rather than poured on site, ensuring consistent wall thickness, structural integrity, and weld quality. Steel is also significantly lighter than concrete, making it easier to transport, position, and anchor. Concrete shelters can crack over time due to ground movement and freeze-thaw cycles; steel does not.
What is the advantage of steel tornado shelters over fiberglass?
Steel is significantly stronger than fiberglass under impact loading from wind-borne debris. Fiberglass can delaminate, crack, and degrade under UV exposure over time. Steel shelters maintain their structural integrity for decades without the material degradation that affects fiberglass units.
What keeps it from rusting?
Survive-A-Storm shelters are chemically treated and then our below ground shelters are caulked and then coated with 15 mils of coal tar epoxy. All joints are sealed and the unit is outcome is similar to being dipped in rubber. The interior our our below ground tornado shelters and all of our above ground safe rooms are powdercoated. Powdercoating provides a much more durable, longer-lasting finish than paint and our company is the only known storm shelter manufacturer to invest in this process.
Do you have electrical entrances in your storm shelters?
Yes. Electrical conduit entrances are available on Survive-A-Storm shelters, allowing you to run power, lighting, or communications wiring into the shelter interior.
What keeps the door on your tornado shelters from opening in a storm?
The doors are secured with heavy-duty interior latching systems specifically designed to resist the pressure differentials and debris impacts associated with tornado conditions. The latch and hinge system is engineered to remain closed under extreme wind loading.
Are your tornado shelter doors lockable from the outside?
Yes, our shelters can be locked from the outside so that valuables can be kept inside your shelter. It is, however, impossible to be locked inside our tornado shelters because the inside lever operates independently from the exterior lock.
Do your underground tornado shelters condensate?
Some condensation can occur in below-ground shelters, particularly in humid climates. This is managed through proper ventilation design and, where needed, moisture-absorbing materials inside the shelter. Survive-A-Storm's below-ground units are designed with this in mind.
How do you treat the condensation in a below ground storm shelter?
Condensation in below-ground shelters is managed through passive ventilation, dehumidifying products such as desiccant packs and periodic interior wipe-downs or a moisture remediation kit (included with your purchase). Keeping a small battery-powered dehumidifier inside the shelter during periods of high humidity is also effective.
Installation
Where can I put a TwisterPod or Extreme safe room?
Most garages, carports, or patios can accept either model. For customers near one of Survive-A-Storm's Home Depot locations, a virtual site visit can be conducted to confirm your concrete meets installation specifications.
How are your storm shelters vented?
Survive-A-Storm shelters include engineered venting designed to allow air circulation while preventing water intrusion and debris entry. Vent placement and design comply with FEMA and ICC-500 standards for safe room ventilation.
Why is it important for a storm shelter company to be an NSSA member?
The National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) sets and enforces industry standards for storm shelter design, testing, and installation. NSSA membership requires adherence to these standards and subjects products to independent verification. A non-member manufacturer has no obligation to meet these standards, making NSSA membership a meaningful baseline indicator of product credibility.
How do you determine the amount of people your storm shelter will fit?
Capacity is calculated based on FEMA guidelines, which specify a minimum of 5 square feet of floor space per occupant for short-duration sheltering events. Survive-A-Storm lists occupancy figures based on this standard, so actual usable space will feel more generous for smaller groups.

We purchased a storm shelter about a year and a half ago. Fortunately we haven't had to use it but we have it ready. The bench is also a storage area. I think I have half my house in there! Ha. There is plenty of room for snacks, water, a saw, pliers, ear plugs, a small air horn, a whistle, tarp, lock, helmets, and much more.
The people we dealt with were extremely professional. They explained everything they were doing as they installed it and could answer all our questions. I'd give them a 10 if possible.
Great company with great customer service!!
This is the place for ALL of your Storm Shelter needs! Why not raise your home value while also providing a safe space for your family! Never doubt that a Tornado can’t happen in your life. Hopefully it never will but it’s an absolute possibility. Now that Tornado Alley is shifting East, Dixie Alley will continue to be a problem, trust me on that.
We did a lot of research about safe rooms and finally decided on Survive-a-Storm. We could not be more pleased! Customer service was great from beginning to installation! We hope we never have to use our safe room but we have peace of mind it is sitting in our garage!!!
LOVE MY TWISTER POD, ITS SOLID AS A TANK, AFTER 10 YEARS OF FEAR DURING TORNADO WARNINGS IN NORTH ALABAMA, I NOW FEEL SAFE! THANKS GUYS

from 401 reviewsIt took really ling to get here i had my doubts it was coming but yall came through
Purchased two 23zeros 5 years ago, the 87 is for my wife and I and both were mounted on our Ford E350 15 passenger van. We spent 3 months living in them during housing transition and I slept in the 87 for over 500 nights these past two years, for health reasons, after I experienced a stroke at our toxic, built in 1948 rental house. I find the tents extremely well built, comfortable and they've proven their durability. We're in the Pacific NW and the tents have withstood extremely high wind gusting over 60mph (duringall night storms), pouring rain, heavy snow load and summer heat. UV on the rain fly has taken a toll but it's still holding it's own, zero water leaks, ever.
Outstanding product. It was a blast to build, very complete and straightforward assembly, great quality materials. The shipping was a small issue as it comes on a 5’ by 6’ skid and without a forklift home delivery is not an option. All the nuts and bolts were sorted and packed perfectly. The off road tires look great and will be tested. Make sure you have a large torque wrench for the 160 ft-lbs nuts!
Assembly wasn’t bad Riding it is a blast. Better than I expected, what a fun bike. Very glad I purchased it
Display screen was way too dim during sunlight i think the back break pads were too close to the disk breaks but probably an easy fix. Other than that the torque and power is awesome
Hey folks, Rich here. 62 years young and just got my third e-bike, the G300 Pro. After 40 years in the saddle, I finally found THE ONE. This machine lets me keep up with riders half my age! The handling's so natural it feels like an extension of my body, no fighting the bike, just pure riding joy. It's not just transportation; it's my pride and joy that'll be turning heads at the local meetups. To the team at Happyrunsports: Thank you for helping this old dog ride like he's still got puppy energy!
My son loves riding dirt bikes and this electric bike is absolutely amazing! He puts his helmet on and rides it all over our farm. The battery holds a charge for the many miles he rides every day and the bike and tires hold up to the rough terrain on the farm! We love this bike!!
Very smooth my son loves it
So far it’s been great. put it together with my 15 yr old son. Drove it once it was a blast. Took me a minute to figure out how to get it to go and change “gears”, but other than that easy breezy so far. I might by another one for my son once we get our house in the country. It’s fast so get yourself a motorcycle helmet:)

Just installed. Packaging was phenomenal. Best packing for any package I have ever received. Directions are perfect. Inventory of items was perfect. I installed on the truck rather than the floor then lifting it with four people. By installing it on the truck I needed a second person here and there. I only have one small complaint, but I still give this a 99.99% rating. The complaint might possibly be because I assembled it on the truck instead of the floor. I have a super small gap where the rear section meets the side section at the truck rail. Its pinhole size. I will probably dab it with sealant if it leaks. I will be going to the car wash and testing it out first, but it is so very small it may not even need the sealant. I'm talking literally a pinhole size. I wonder if I assembled on the floor first if it wouldn't even be there. Other than that, everything about this topper is PURE CLASS. Shipping time, packaging, instructions, quality of materials, assembly. I love this topper.
